What Do We Mean By "Paranormal"?
par·a·nor·mal / Adjective:
"of or pertaining to the claimed occurrence of an event or perception without scientific explanation, as psychokinesis, extrasensory perception, or other purportedly supernatural phenomena."
That is the normal dictionary definition, and is a bit of a mouthful. In short, if you are concerned about any of the following phenomena then its safe to say you may be interested in consulting a paranormal research team:
- Apparitions and Hauntings (such as figures, mists, shadows, etc.)
- Poltergeists (mischievous ghosts that seem to wish to alarm or perhaps harm you)
- Disembodied sounds or voices
- Disappearing objects (or re-appearing objects!)
- Unusual smells that seem to defy explanation
- Irrational feelings of being watched
It should be pointed out that the paranormal is not normally considered to be an area worthy of scientific research, which is why it is left to groups such as ours to gather as much data as we can without jumping to conclusions one way or the other. Too much of mainstream science has pretty much made up its mind before gathering the data, against some basic scientific principles.
NSPR's mission is to gather information in a scientific manner, and to offer a friendly, discrete and non-judgemental ear to people's experiences. That means no exorcisms, no cleansing, no priests wielding crosses, and none of the other paraphernalia often associated with the field.
